Trip to the Spiezer local mountain Niesen

  • Mülenen
The 2’362-meter-high Niesen is, due to its iconic form often referred to as the «Swiss pyramid on the Lake Thun». The 360-degree-panoramic view of the Spiez local mountain ranges from the impressive Bernese Alps, Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, the Bernese Mittelland and to the Jura.

From Spiez the station at the lower station Mülenen is just a few minutes away by car. With the train you can also get to the starting point of the Niesenbahn in just 5 minutes. Just the journey alone with the nostalgic funicular railway to the top of the Niesen is an experience in itself. It goes up steeply: The impressive incline is up to 68%. Next to the rails there is also the longest and most impressive stairway in the world to the Niesen with 11’674 steps. Every June top fit runners take part in the legendary Niesen stairway-run challenge. On the top of the mountain there is a mountain lodge with a restaurant and eleven charming double rooms. A playground and a lookout platform with a wide view in all four directions also belong to what the summit has to offer.

Hiking

From Mülenen and Wimmis there are hiking routes leading up to the Niesen. The ascent takes about 4 to 5 hours and a steep climb with an altitude of 1’700 meters to overcome. The Niesenbahn offers a special hiking ticket, in which visitors can use the funicular on three different sections and can walk to one.

Mountain lodge Niesen Kulm

The mountain restaurant in the mountain lodge is a real eye-catcher with its unique glass pavilion. Here you can really relax and enjoy, whether it is with a big brunch or a delicious lunch.

With the sunrise-deal you overnight in 2’300 meters height above sea level in one of the eleven double rooms and enjoy the funicular ride, dinner and the Niesen brunch.

The Niesen funicular railway also offers consistently during the season various culinary evening programmes with funicular rides. Apart from that the Niesen is also well-known for its diversified cultural events – true to its motto «up to culture».

Energy spot on Lake Thun

The Niesen belongs to one of a dozenenergy spots in the region of Spiez
Seen from the north the 2’362 meters high mountain looks like a big pyramid and is clearly recognisable from all places around Lake Thun. Just as impressive as the sight from the lake basin is the 360° view from the summit.  The Niesen is a really powerful mountain and isn’t called the guardian of Lake Thun for nothing. The energy is mainly noticeable from the summit, where the visitors are attracted to the earthen spirit of the mountain and at the same time be close to the heavens.
