Thanks to the «Spirit of Spiez» to the World Cup championship title

On the 4th of July 1954 the German national football team beat in the World Cup final in the Bernese Wankdorf stadium in front of 60’000 fanatic spectators the highly favourised Hungary by 3:2 and won the World Cup champions title. «The Miracle of Bern» was born. Winning of the title was greeted with great euphoria in the post-war period. Those who talk about «The Miracle of Bern» will certainly not avoid also mentioning «The Spirit of Spiez».

The Spirit of Spiez

The team spirit was the key

The German national team with the legendary captain Fritz Walter and the trainer Sepp Herberger lodged during the football World Cup in the Strandhotel Belvédère in Spiez. Walter said in an interview: «The good spirit of Spiez contributed to the team who managed to make the miracle of Bern happen». Since then the Strandhotel Belvédère has been regarded as a place of pilgrimage for football fanatics from the whole of Germany.

On the lakeside path between Spiez and Faulensee, the World Cup trainer Sepp Herberger developed the tactic for the World Cup matches. Three hand-carved wooden statues with panels to read about the history and various benches with quotes recall the time in 1954.
