The 800-year old Oberhofen Castle is located directly on Lake Thun. Apart from exciting permanent and temporary exhibitions as well as numerous offers for children, a splendid park and a restaurant with a breathtaking view of the site.
Until the mid-20th century Oberhofen Castle was dwelled by a rich, noble family. It was only in 1954 that the rooms inside were turned into a museum. There are fascinating permanent exhibitions with different themes shown. Discover how the everyday life in the 19th century was or visit the oriental smoking lounge which Count Albert de Pourtalès had set up in the dungeons of the building. In the small permanent exhibition “Kinderwelten” you will discover a selection of toys, with which the noble children of the castle in the 19th century might have played with – unfortunately the original toys have not been preserved.
After meandering through the exhibition it is worth having time off by strolling through the colourful garden of the castle. In Oberhofen Castle you can also let yourself be pampered by the gastronomy: Enjoy in the restaurant with a beautiful view of Lake Thun Italian specialties or review the impressions of your visit to the castle over a coffee.
Tip: Arrive by boat! Oberhofen Castle is situated directly next to the Schiffländte landing stage.
The young guests experience many adventures in Oberhofen Castle! Many offers suitable for children make the museum a unique experience for the whole family. In the costume studio which is open on certain Sundays, children can become a princess, a noble knight or a dreaded castle ghost. In the historic children’s room at the audio stations you can listen in on some fairytales and on the «Mäusepfad» it’s all about trying to find as many mice as possible which are hiding in the castle. Of course there is a small reward for the successful little mouse-catcher.
The Oberhofen Castle is – amongst the castles in Spiez and Thun – also a trainings castle on the knight trail: Here the children can become knights. Here is the link to the knight trail.
